From the inside looking out, you could never explain it"

How It Began

Two years ago,  a small group of Xi Psi Alumnae composed of Samantha Hardenburgh, Rebecca Sack, Kristyn (Walker) Brinker, Stefanie (Studenka) DeShetler, Maureen (Notestine) Michaels and Carleen Kormos founded the Light of the Flame Scholarship Competition in order to help an active Xi Psi Sister in need to pay dues for one academic year.  Together we awarded this honor to Stacey Kingma and then Lauren Mussin.

In the beginning, we needed to start small in order to assess the need and the Alumnae reaction.  Last year we opened the ranking process to all alumni on the contact list and the response was overwhelmingly positive!  I have heard back from Alumnae who said they opened the packet of essays, to find themselves in tears or laughing because they could closely relate to the experiences these active women were having in their years in Delta Zeta and on GVSUs campus.   They found times may change but the same love, friendship, and challenges remain.

Last year, with the devotion and generosity of the Xi Psi Alumnae we were able to give three awards to women who were in need of financial help.  Elizabeth Bishop, Ellen Filippidis and Lauren Bettcher captured the hearts of the Alumnae with their essays , and earned the Scholarship.  We are hoping to hit those donation totals again and possibly keep a woman in the chapter who might otherwise have to say goodbye.
